Jesus said, "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." Many who died in battle believed they were doing exactly that for their brothers in arms, for their families back home, for the idea of a free nation. Their sacrifice points upward, even if imperfectly, to the One who did it perfectly and finally.
