According to Open Doors’ 2026 World Watch List, 4,849 Christians were murdered for their faith during the most recent reporting period. Of those, 93% (4,491) occurred in sub-Saharan Africa. Nigeria alone accounted for roughly 3,490 of the deaths—about 72% of the global total.

These are not abstract numbers. They are targeted killings by Islamist militants (Boko Haram, ISWAP), Fulani herdsmen militias, and similar groups attacking Christian villages, churches, and farming communities. Attacks continue into 2026; for example, late July raids in Kaduna State killed dozens, including children.

In the United States, lethal religious persecution of this kind is effectively nonexistent. American Christians face cultural hostility, institutional bias, occasional vandalism, or legal pressure in some domains—but not organized mass murder by religious extremists. The scale and nature of the violence are concentrated far outside the West.

Western Christianity debate tone, inclusion, and emotional styles of leadership, while thousands of Christians elsewhere are being killed for the simple fact of being Christian.
