The Rajneeshees, followers of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (later Osho), established a religious commune called Rajneeshpuram in Wasco County, Oregon, during the 1980s. Located on the former Big Muddy Ranch, the community grew to house up to 7,000 residents who built a self-sufficient city with infrastructure including an airport, hospitals, and a mass transit system.
The group attempted to take over the local town of Antelope (renaming it Rajneesh) and swayed local elections by busing thousands of homeless people into the area to register as voters.
Bioterrorism Attack: In 1984, commune leader Ma Anand Sheela orchestrated the largest biological warfare attack in U.S. history, poisoning salad bars in 10 restaurants with Salmonella to influence local elections, sickening 751 people.
Criminal Charges: The commune collapsed in 1985 amid investigations into immigration fraud, wiretapping, arson, and attempted murder of federal officials. Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh pleaded guilty to immigration fraud and was deported, while Sheela and others served prison sentences.
Legacy: The physical structures of Rajneeshpuram fell into disrepair or were repurposed, such as the main gathering hall becoming a Young Life summer camp, leaving behind a legacy of cultural tension and historical notoriety.
